In fact, in several instances translators have definitely worked from my translation rather than from the original. When it came to the Spanish translation of Tayeb's novel, the Spanish publisher started out by indicating that he wished to have the novel translated from the English [...]. Then the publisher changed his mind and said that the translation would after all be made straight from the Arabic. When the novel came out I asked for a copy and saw that several minor changes I had made in my translation —with the author's agreement— had mysteriously also found their way into the Spanish translation!---Denys Johnson-Davies, Memories in Translation.
